Letters to the Future
MASHA (26) has been proposed to but is scared of a new stage in her
life. Under the excuse of caring for her grandmother EVA (83) who
suffers from Alzheimer's disease, Masha flees to her hometown in eastern
Ukraine. Her boyfriend MITJA (28) follows her. After the Russians begin
to occupy the town, the couple find themselves trapped in Eva's house.
Eva's condition gets worse, she starts remembering her KOLYA, whose
life was ended by the Soviet government. She looks through their
amorous correspondence. Masha and Mitja read the letters aloud to
each other, and the boundaries between past and present disappear.
Trapped in a world of memories, Eva begins to see Mitja as her lover.
Mitja finds a way to escape the occupied area with the partisans, but Eva
insists that she must first marry Kolya, only then she can leave. Masha
fulfills Eva's wish and arranges the wedding ceremony, with Mitja acting
as Kolya. The symbolic wedding transforms Masha's reality and allows
Eva to heal old wounds. The next morning, the reality of the film is also
transformed. It is spring, there is no trace of the war, and the characters
of Masha and Mitja disappear. The house looks tidier and brighter. Eva
and Kolya's young family is having a peaceful breakfast in the kitchen.
